Abstract

1426123 Radiant burner SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 20 June 1973 [22 June 1972] 29233/73 Heading F4T A radiant burner has a distributor 4 via which fuel gas/air mixture is supplied to the interior of a hollow body 1 for passage through flame ports 2 thereof which open into spaces between adjacent turns of a metal radiant means 7 helically wound on the exterior surface of body 1. The body 1 may be a cylinder, truncated cone, prism or a hemisphere and can be made of ceramic material, metal gauze or perforated metal sheet. The radiant means 7 may be a coiled-coil of steel or refractory metal alloy and can be provided with a reinforcing wire (8), Fig. 2 (not shown), of a refractory metal of low thermal expansion coefficient. The radiant means 7 may alternatively consist of steel or refractory metal alloy flat strip with the flat surfaces lying in planes approximately normal to the exterior surface of body 1. A top end of body 1 is closed by a blank metal disc 3 or by an apertured plate whereat flames are formed which heat to incandescence a steel or refractory metal alloy disc spaced above the plate.
