Abstract
1,099,678. Testing straightness of surface. RANK PRECISION INDUSTRIES Ltd., [trading as RANK ORGANISATION RANK TAYLOR HOBSON DIVISION]. May 28, 1965 [May 28, 1964], No. 22091/64. Heading G1M. Apparatus for measuring or indicating lack of straightness along a surface comprises a carriage C mounted for traversing movement along an accurately straight datum B, a pair of oppositely directed feelers E carried in a common plane by the carriage and for engagement during traversing with the surface of the workpiece F to be tested, such feelers being mounted for movement relative to the carriage for executing movement normal to the test surface and detecting means responsive to said movement of each feeler for operating a measuring instrument to provide two indications of the movements of the feelers. Suspended by ligaments D 2 from the carriage C is a member D 1 which forms part of the frame on which the feelers are mounted. The workpiece F is adjustably mounted on supports G. For testing the exterior of a cylindrical surface the two feelers are mounted on the lower ends of arms D<SP>3</SP> forming a detachable part of the frame D. The feelers are adjustable to bring either one feeler or the other into contact with the test surface. The working movement of the feelers is measured by an electromagnetic detector mounted in the carriage arm C<SP>3</SP>. The measurement is preferably made by traversing the carriage with one feeler in contact and then the other, the changeover being effected by the means J. The workpiece is accurately positioned by means of a device which deflects the feelers across the test surface at right angles to the direction of traverse. The movement is effected by the arm C<SP>3</SP> of the carriage which bears against a supplementary guide B<SP>1</SP>. An alternative frame may be connected to D for internal testing, Figs. 4, 5, 6 (not shown), comprising an arm D<SP>6</SP> extending through the workpiece and carrying outwardly biased feelers.
