Abstract

An organosilicon composition for finishing glass fabric comprises (A) a silane of the formula RSiX3, wherein R is an ethylenically unsaturated substituent attached via a Si-C bond, and X is a hydrolysable atom or group, or copolymers of the above silanes with unsaturated organic monomers and (B) 2-50% by weight, calculated on the weight of (A), of a siloxane-alkylene oxide copolymer. The substituent R may comprise an alkenyl, vinyl aromatic, acrylate, methacrylate, maleate, fumarate, itaconate, unsaturated tricarboxylate, cinnamate or sorbate radical; X may be a halogen atom, alkoxy, acyloxy or oxime group. An especially preferred silane is CH2=C(CH3)COO(CH2)3-Si(OCH3)3 The unsaturated organic comonomers which are specified are methyl acrylate and methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, diethyl maleate, dimethyl itaconate, maleic anhydride, styrene and dimethyl fumarate. Specification 960,534 is referred to in this respect. The siloxane-ethylene oxide copolymer may have the siloxane and alkylene oxide portions joined by a hydrolysable Si-O-C bond or preferably by a non-hydrolysable Si-C bond. Components (A) and (B) are applied in an aqueous acetic acid solution.ALSO:Glass fabric is finished by treatment with a composition comprising (A) a silane of the formula RSiX3 wherein R is an ethylenically unsaturated substituent attached via a Si-C bond and X is a hydrolysable atom or group or copolymers of the above with unsaturated organic monomers and (B) 2-50% by weight of (A) of a siloxane-alkylene oxide copolymer.
