Abstract

1306992 Laminated products DOW CORNING CORP 16 April 1970 [15 May 1969] 18186/70 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] Resin-bonded laminates are made from glass cloth which has been treated with a cationic organosilicon compound of the general formula in which X is OH or a hydrolysable radical; R is C 1-6 alkyl ; R<SP>1</SP> is H, C 1-6 alkyl or a heterocyclic organic radical containing the N atom, to which R<SP>1</SP> is attached, as ring member; Q is a divalent radical consisting of C and H optionally with O in the form of -COC-, -COOC-, >C=O or >COH or N in the form of R<SP>11</SP>N<, with the proviso that when Q contains C=O, R<SP>1</SP> is not H; m is 1 when R<SP>1</SP> is heterocyclic or 2 when R<SP>1</SP> is H or alkyl; Z is a divalent radical having a double bond conjugated with the CH 2 =CR<SP>11</SP>- moiety and is bonded to the N by C; R<SP>11</SP> is H or C 1-6 alkyl; n is 1, 2 or 3; end Y is an acid anion. Examples 2 and 5 describe the manufacture of polyester bonded treated glass cloth laminates. In a modification, the cationic silicon compounds can first be copolymerized with an unsaturated compound and the reinforcing material laminated to the vinylic copolymer. Aluminium or steel may be treated with the organosilicon compounds and subsequently bonded to a sheet of vinyl polymer (many specified). Steel or ceramics are bonded to a layer of a copolymer of one of the silicon compounds with an acrylate. In Example 6, a compound is copolymerized with butadiene and the copolymeric rubber bonded to untreated glass tyre cord fabric.
