Abstract
A heat-hardenable fibrous ceramic material suitable for coating thermocouple junctions (see Division H1) comprises fibres of, for example, alumina and silica in equal quantities by weight, bonded together by a heat hardenable binder such as a colloidal silica binding agent. The material is formed from a slurry comprising the fibrous ceramic material dispersed in water. The binding agent is added in a concentration of 20-25% by weight, based on solids. The mixture, comprising 30% solids and 70% water, is introduced to a tank provided with a porous felting screen associated with suction means. The fibrous material and the binding agent accumulate on the screen, and when the desired thickness is reached the screen is removed from the tank and suction is maintained until the water content is about 20% by weight and the colloidal silica binding agent content is about 5% by weight on a solids basis. The material may then be moulded and heat-hardened around the thermo-couple junctions (see Divisions B4-B5). Other suitable fibrous ceramic materials include mineral or rock wool, beryllia, zirconia, titania, slag wool or quartz. The binding agent may alternatively be sodium silicate, colloidal alumina, colloidal zirconia &c.
