Abstract
Esters of orthoformic acid with C2- 6 alkanols are obtained by reacting an ester of orthoformic acid and a relatively lower alkanol with the appropriate C2- 6 alkanol in the presence of an insoluble organic ion exchanger which contains sulphonic acid residue, and removing from the reaction mixture the relatively lower alkanol liberated by the ester interchange. The reaction may be effected at 15-60 DEG C. and may be carried out batchwise or continuously. In examples orthoformic acid trimethyl ester is reacted with ethanol, n- and iso-propanol and n-butanol in the presence of a sulphonated copolymer of styrene and divinyl benzene as the ion exchanger.
