Abstract

1,099,505. Parametric frequency changers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 4, 1965 [Nov. 9, 1964], No. 45539/64. Heading H3B. A microwave frequency changer uses a varactor diode contained in a waveguide section 3, Fig. 1, to modulate a microwave signal (f> 10<SP>3</SP> Mc/s.) from a source 1 with a lower frequency, frequency-modulated, signal from a source 2, one side-band of the resulting modulated signal being selected by a waveguide filter 4 as an output to an aerial 5, and a part of the signal rejected by the filter being reflected back to the diode in a phase appropriate for it to be reconverted into the required side-band, the overall power loss between the microwave source and the output being less than 5 db. It is stated that without reflection the power loss must exceed 6 db. Reflection of side-band components back to the microwave source 1 is prevented by a narrow band waveguide filter 6. The waveguide section 3 is described in detail, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). Within this section is mounted a vertical T-shaped bar (11), opposite arms (19), (20) of which are each one quarter of a wavelength long at the frequency of the source 1 so as to serve as a microwave signal choke and termination respectively. The choke arm is extended so as to form part of a coaxial line connector (24). The varactor diode (27) is carried by a screw (29) adjustably mounted in a holder (26), and has a pin engaging spring fingers (28) in the branch arm (25) of the T- shaped bar. Matching for maximum microwave power at the diode and to optimize the power of the sideband components is effected by screws (30).
