Abstract

1,160,623. Microwave modulators. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON HOUSTON-HOTCHKTSS BRANDT. 31 March, 1967 [31 March, 1966], No. 14965/67. Heading H3R. A suppressed carrier modulator comprises a pair of diodes 1, 2 (Fig. 4) spaced apart by a quarter wavelength along a transmission line or waveguide and oppositely biased by a modulation source 3. In Fig. 4, the diodes are arranged in series along a coaxial line terminated by an impedance 4. In a modification (Figs. 2 and 5, not shown), the diodes are shunted across a waveguide. Either arrangement produces a suppressed carrier signal. Fig. 6 shows a single sideband suppressed carrier signal system. The carrier F is supplied at port A of a hybrid ring which is coupled at C and D to modulators as described above. The modulation source 3 is supplied in phase quadrature to the two modulators, one of which includes an extra eighth of a wavelength coupling so that one sideband cancels at port B, from which an output is taken, and the other at port A.
