Abstract
1,263,434. Amplitude modulation. ELEKTRONIKKLABORATORIET VED NTH. 9 April, 1970 [16 April, 1969], No. 16876/70. Heading H3R. In an amplitude modulation system, the carrier signal is modulated to discrete levels which approximate to the required modulation envelope. In one embodiment, hybrid 6 splits the carrier signal into two components which are differentially phase modulated by transmission lines 13, 14. The lines are provided with short circuiting diodes located along them at predetermined points, so that switching of the diodes in dependence of the modulation signal amplitude will produce stepwise complementary variations in the phase angle of the signals + #, - #. These two signals are then combined in hybrid 7 to give the required amplitude modulated output. The carrier signal is also applied to a similar channel 5 for modulation with a different signal. In a simpler arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), a single hybrid and transmission line are used. The carrier is applied to one port (P1). The modulated output is extracted from the diagonally opposite one (P2), and the two ends of a transmission line (23) are connected to the other two ports (P3, P4). Details of the arrangement for generating signals at 90 Hz and 150 Hz from a single 900 Hz source and for converting them to step function signals for switching the transmission line diodes are also described, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown).
