Abstract

1,099,378. Aerials. MARCONI CO. Ltd. Feb. 18, 1966 [April 29, 1965], No. 18109/65. Heading H4A. A conical horn aerial 1 suitable for use with linearly or circularly polarized radio waves comprises at least four metal rods 5 which are equally spaced around an imaginary conical surface coaxial with and inside the horn, and a plurality of equally spaced radial metal vanes 4 projecting from the inside of the horn towards the rods 5. A dielectric plate 6 in the mouth of the horn supports the outer ends of the rods 5 and their inner ends may either be supported by another dielectric plate or may extend to the horn. As described, there are eight rods 5 and sixteen vanes 4, eight of the latter being angularly co-incident with the rods. A circular waveguide section 2 at the small end of the horn has a flange 3 for coupling to a feeder. The spacing between adjacent vanes 4 is such that an electric vector parallel to their mean plane cannot be propagated between them, and it is stated that the main lobe widths in the E- and H-plane radiation patterns are thereby made substantially equal. The rods 5 are stated to produce reductions of the side lobes.
