Abstract

A vinyl monomer is grafted in an emulsified system containing alumina or alumina-silica sol on to cellulosic fibres previously subjected to ionizing radiation. In the examples, the monomers used are styrene, vinyl acetate and n-butyl acrylate and the cellulosic backbones are polynosic rayon, cotton or high tenacity rayon irradiated with electron beams or polynosic rayon irradiated with Co60 g -rays. The grafting takes place by immersing the irradiated fibres in an aqueous homogeneous emulsion of the monomer and alumina or alumina-silica sol.
