Abstract

A textile material is finished by impregnation with an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer comprising 60-80% by wt. of styrene units and 40-20% of acrylonitrile units in the absence of a plasticizer, and then heating the material to 120-220 DEG C. The copolymer may also contain 0.05-10% of acrylic, methacrylic, styrene or vinyl sulphonic, or itaconic acid; or of a C1- 20 alkyl or cycloalkyl acrylate or methacrylate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, butadiene, isoprene or 2-chlorobutadiene; and the copolymer may be cross-linked with a methylol compound of acrylamide or methacrylamide, glycol diacrylate or dimethacrylate, allyl acrylate or methacrylate or divinylbenzene. The textile material may be dyed with a basic or acid dyestuff which is reactive with the acid or basic groups respectively in the copolymer. Dyestuffs used in example (2) were <FORM:1106212/C3/1> and <FORM:1106212/C3/2> The dispersion may contain a surfactant e.g. an ethylene oxide condensate, sodium styrene sulphonate or nonylphenol and a pigment e.g. titanium dioxide.ALSO:A textile material or fleece is finished by impregnation with an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer comprising 60-80% by wt. of styrene units and 40-20% of acrylonitrile units, in the absence of a plasticizer, and then heating the material to 120-220 DEG C. The textile material may contain fibres of wool, cotton, cellulose acetate, a polyamide, polyolefine, poly-1,1-dicyano-ethene or polyester. In examples the material was in the form of a knitted curtain.
