A cable spacer for bundled overhead conductors has clamps pivoted to the spacer arms by members which are placed in shear by relative longitudinal movement of the conductors. The figure shows an H-shaped spacer in which the four conductors to be spaced are mounted in clamps 1. The clamps themselves are attached to the ring members 4 which are mounted between the jaws formed by the upper and lower members 23, 24 of the spacer arms. The inner faces of the jaws are provided with sloping annular faces as are the inner faces of the rings. Between these faces are two rubber or synthetic rubber elements 12 which carry nibs 19 engaging in faces of the jaws and rings. Thus if one cable moves longitudinally relative to the clamp, rubber member 12 is placed in shear. Any other movement introduces at least an element of compression. A similar arrangement is employed for attaching the arms of the H to the cross pieces 25. The rubber member 12 may consist of a number of parallel sections with metal or cloth inserts. An arrangement is also described (Fig. 6, not shown) in which the spacer is X-shaped, the rubber shear member being mounted between the clamp and a central piece carrying four sets of jaws. Stops are provided to limit the clamp movement but in the latter embodiment the rubber members are bonded to the jaws. The jaws may be carried by the clamps (Fig. 7, not shown).
