Abstract

1,098,186. Testing hydraulic circuits. FAIREY ENGINEERING Ltd. April 29, 1965 [April 30, 1964], No.18018/64. Heading F1P. The level of contamination by solid particles of fluid in a hydraulic circuit is periodically assessed by passing the fluid during a predetermined time period through a fine elongated orifice 21 in a line 11 connecting the supply and return lines of the circuit, and detecting the pressure drop caused by silting of the orifice 21 by connecting opposite ends thereof by lines 35, 37 to opposite ends of a magnetic plunger 31 which when displaced against a biasing spring 36 and away from a red button 32 of magnetic material allows the latter to be projected by a spring 33 from its housing 29. The time interval, which is adjusted in accordance with the viscosity of the fluid, is that required for the fluid to pass from the supply end of line 11 through a line 61, the relatively coarse thread of a screw plug 43 and a line 62 to fill a cylinder space 48 whereupon the resulting pressure rise is transmitted through a line 60 to the underside of a magnetic plunger 55 and lifts it away from a green button 56 of magnetic material to allow the latter to be projected by a spring 57, from its housing. If the red button appears before the cylinder 48 is filled and hence before the green button appears the level of contamination is considered unduly high. In the event of the green button appearing first the test is considered finished and the red button is prevented from emerging by the green button. The succeeding test is initiated only after the orifice 21 has been freed of accumulated silt.
