Abstract

887,963. Thermostatic filter-clogging indicators. PUROLATOR PRODUCTS Inc. July 1, 1960, No. 23137/60. Class 46. An indicator rod 16 having a flat face on an upper portion and a rib 33 on a lower portion is normally retained in an invisible position by engagement of the upper end of the rib under part of the cylindrical portion of a piston 14 movable in a cylindrical chamber 13 which partly intersects the cylindrical bore 15a in which rod 16 is located, the piston 14 normally being urged into contact with the left-hand end of chamber 13 by a spring 26a. Upon a predetermined pressure difference between a filter inlet 11 and outlet 12 being exceeded, the resistance of spring 26a is overcome until the Fig. 2 position is reached, where a notch 25 on piston 14 has come opposite the rib 33, permitting rod 16 to be forced upwards by a spring 32. Changes in atmospheric pressure (accessible to parts 14, 15 of the piston through bore 15a and loose fitting of the piston) are prevented from reaching and affecting the filter pressure conduits 20 and 17 by resilient rings 23, 24. At temperatures below a predetermined value, when excess pressure difference may be due only to high viscosity of the liquid (e.g. oil), being filtered, a bi-metallic coil 27 carrying a valve disc 29 closes inlet 18 of chamber 13 to prevent ingress of oil and thereby prevent actuation of the indicator device.
