Abstract
Aluminium chloride is produced by contacting a mixture of aluminium particles and liquid TiCl4 at 120-150 DEG C. with chlorine, either by passing gaseous Cl2 up through the mixture or using liquid Cl2 mixed with the TiCl4. When the temperature is above the b.pt. of TiCl4, 136 degrees, superatmospheric pressure is applied to prevent boiling. Al pellets and hot TiCl4 are introduced into a steam, water or oil jacketed reaction vessel of glass, steel, Ni, or alloy, and Cl2 is bubbled through or introduced in TiCl4, while liquid TiCl4 + AlCl3 is withdraw at the top. The reaction is carried out under reflux. Pure AlCl3 may be recovered from its solution in TiCl4 or the mixed halides may be oxidized in the vapour phase to produce TiO2 containing alumina.
