Abstract

334,241. Elkington, H. D., (Naamlooze Vennootschap de Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij). May 30, 1929. Hydrocarbons are cracked by passing them either in a gaseous or liquid state through molten baths of a non-metallic substance, or a mixture of such substances, which is not decomposed at the temperature of the reaction and which has a melting point below the reaction temperature and a boiling point so far above that temperature that substantially no vapours are formed during the reaction. A fused mixture of eCJui-mole{,ular quantities of barium and calcium chlorides melting about 500‹ C. is preferably employed. Butane passed through a bath of this kind maintained at a temperature of 750‹ C. produced a gas containing 18.5 per cent of propylene and 18.7 per cent of ethylene. The pressure of the butane was just sufficient to overcome the head of liquid. Other suitable salt mixtures are calcium chloride with calcium fluoride, manganese chloride, potassium chloride, or sodium chloride, and potassium chloride with magnesium or sodium chloride. Molten tellurium may also be used, a catalytic action being exercised by this element; the steel of the apparatus must be protected in this ease e.g. by an aluminium lining. When using liquids, these are passed into the molten bath under pressure.
