Abstract

109,778. Hooke, A. E. Sept. 18, 1916. Detachable propelling installations; screw propellers.-Relates to power-driving mechanism for canal barges and other water craft of the type comprising a propeller driven from above the water line by a vertical telescopic shaft enclosed in a telescopic casing. In this arrangement the propeller is arranged to be raised or lowered by means operated from the deck of the craft, and the propeller is adapted to be displaced about a vertical axis eccentric to that of the telescopic shaft for the purpose of steering the craft. The two parts 23, 31, Fig. 2, of the telescopic shaft are feathered at 32, and the inner part 28 of the telescopic casing 24 is fitted with a bracket nut 33 engaging a screw 34 operated from the deck, preferably by bevel-gearing 35. Brackets 25 and pivot pins 26 are provided for pivotally supporting the propeller element which is manipulated by the tiller. The propeller may have a protecting cage 38 and steering vane 39 supported by a stay 40 from the bracket 33. The complete installation shown comprises an internal-combustion engine 1, mounted on the top of the cabin, a telescopic driving-shaft 11, 12 with universal joint couplings 6, 21, and a tiller 42.
