Abstract

109,644. Hooke, A. E. Sept. 18, 1916. Detachable propelling installations; screw propellers. - Relates t o detachable power - driving mechanism for canal barges in which the driving- motor is installed separately from the propeller element and imparts power thereto from a point above the water line. In this arrangement, the shaft between the engine and the propeller element is telescopic and is coupled up by universal couplings; the propeller element may also be pivotally installed upon the usual rudder supports so that the propeller may have rotary movement about a vertical axis eccentric to the vertical propeller-driving shaft for steering the craft. Fig. 1 shows the arrangement with an internal-combustion engine 1 on the top of the cabin. The transmission shaft is in telescopic parts 7, 8, Fig. 3, feathered at 9 and enclosed in a telescopic casing 11, 12 which has end flanges 16 for coupling to the flanges 18, 20 of casings 6, 21 containing universal couplings. These couplings have terminal sockets to receive the squared ends 44 of the telescopic shaft 7, 8. The propeller is driven from the shaft through bevel-gearing at the top and bottom of a vertical shaft enclosed within a telescopic casing 24. The propeller can be raised and lowered by means of a screw-shaft 34, operated through bevel-gearing 35 from the deck. Brackets 25 with pivot pins 26 are provided for pivotally supporting the propeller, as shown in Fig. 1, which is manipulated by the tiller 42. The propeller may have a protecting-cage 38 and a steering-vane 39.
