Abstract

1,097,170. Time switches. MALLORY TIMERS Ltd. Sept. 20, 1966 [Sept. 20, 1965], No. 42024/66. Heading H2B. A timer having an adjustable timing cycle and a fixed service cycle includes a driving shaft, a gear-wheel 33 mounted on the driving shaft, a driving mechanism 29, 30, 35, 37, 36 driven by a pinion gear 32 also mounted on the driving shaft, and a segment gear 43 rotatable by the driving mechanism into engagement with the gear-wheel 33 after an adjustably predetermined number of revolutions of the driving shaft so as to be driven by gear-wheel 33 to rotate an output shaft 44 and cams 24, 25, 26 thereon through the fixed service cycle, gear 43 having a toothless portion of sufficient extent to disengage the segment gear 43 from the gear-wheel 33 at the end of the service cycle. The driving mechanism comprises a gear 29 and a cam 30 mounted thereon imparting motion to a cam follower 35 and drive arm 36 biased towards the cam 30 by a spring 37. End 38 of arm 36 rotates a ratchet 39 by a tooth for each revolution of cam 30, a back-up pawl 40 being provided for ratchet 39, until a post 50 on ratchet 39 engages a starter spring 45 which rotates gear 43 by a post 49 thereon until it engages and is driven by gear-wheel 33 (see also Figs. 3-5, not shown). Cams 24, 25, 26, driven by shaft 44 of gear 43 operate switches (20), (Fig. 1, not shown). At the end of the service cycle a post (55) underneath gear 43 engages a pivoted lever 19, which disengages arm 36 and pawl 40 from ratchet 39 which then returns to a position defined by a tong 54 on an adjusting plate 22 under the restoring force of a spring (53), (Figs. 3-5, not shown). Lever 19 is alternatively operated manually by a portion projecting through the escutcheon plate (11). Rotation of a knob 14 moves plate 22 to set the position of ratchet 39, and can also manually cause starter spring 45 to rotate gear 43 into engagement with gear-wheel 33. Knob (15) sets the hour of day at which the service cycle is to begin; the knob rotating with cam 30 and a slipping clutch allowing relative rotation of gear 29 and cam 30.
