Abstract
A bearing component is coated with a pyrolytic graphite, crystallites of which have their basal planes substantially parallel to the surface on the bearing component. The coating of pyrolytic graphite may be deposited directly on the bearing component; may be deposited on to a layer of material, which is afterwards bonded to the bearing; or may be forced into the surface of the bearing component by rolling, for example. Films of pyrolytic graphite may be pressed into contact with sheets of plastics, copper or aluminium, for example. In a method of producing pyrolytic graphite having crystallites with parallel basal planes, methane gas, which is carried in a hydrogen diluent, is passed through a hot ceramic tube containing a metal-plate which is also heated. The methane decomposes and carbon is deposited upon the inner wall of the ceramic tube and upon the surface of the steel-plate. Further heating of the carbon effects annealing thereof and improves the layered structure of the material.
