Abstract

1,096,655. Pistons. RUSTON & HORNSBY Ltd. Oct. 5, 1966 [Aug. 24, 1965], No. 36266/65. Heading F2T. In an I.C. engine or other piston machine, the piston centring and sealing means comprises labyrinths 16, 17, 18, an admission valve 32 for admitting gas to a chamber 21 at predetermined times and by means independent of the gas pressure upon the valve, passages 22-25 leading from the chamber to the exterior of the piston and containing non- return valves 26-29, and at least two exterior ribs disposed parallel to the piston axis. The valve-gear shown is suitable for a four-stroke cycle, the valve stem 34 being provided with a rotatable recessed disc 38 which lifts on alternate movements to the right of a cam 36 attached to the end of connecting rod 13; to prevent lift of the valve during movement of the cam to the left, the disc 38 is arranged to move along a slotted arm 46 against the action of springs. If desired, the valve may be lifted instead by a cam on a crankshaft web acting through a push-rod, or the valve may be lifted by a solenoid energized through slip rings. The piston may be circular, square or of rectangular cross-section as illustrated in Fig. 3 (not shown), the ribs (55) preferably extending the full axial length of the piston and having outer surfaces made of bearing material. The piston may be made of ceramics or cermets. The labyrinths may be formed of circumferential or helical grooves.
