Abstract

1,096,478. Electric motors. A. BLUM. Dec. 7, 1966 [Dec. 24, 1965], No. 54756/66. Heading H2A. In an assemblage comprising a submersible pump 13 connected with an electric motor 12 submersible in and cooled by a liquid to be pumped, the motor is fluid-tightly surrounded by and electrically insulated from a thermally conductive, e.g. metal housing 19 filled with an insulating fluid, e.g. transformer oil, and the motor shaft 16 has an electrically insulating coupling 18 disposed within the housing and connected between the motor and the pump. Thus the motor is completely electrically insulated from the pump and pumped liquid, and as shown, may be further surrounded by a protective case 14 between which and the housing are the insulating fluid and electrically insulating spacing pieces 20. Cooling may be aided by fins on the case and/or housing walls, and/or centrifugal vanes on the shaft.
