886,296. Dynamo-electric machines. SCHAEFER, E. J. Aug. 2, 1960, No. 26697/60. Class 35. A submersible electric motor-pump unit, e.g. for pumping petrol, has a combined electrical and fluid connector whereby the electrical and fluid connections can be completed or broken simultaneously. The stator winding of the motor is connected via member 33 to an electrical connector part 37, the leads 34 being encapsulated in epoxy resin 42 which also partly surrounds a temperature-sensitive protective device 36. Connector part 37 lies in a cavity 63 (Fig. 3) in motor end member 18 and comprises pins 64 protruding from an insulating base 62. End member 18 has a central boss 59 protruding from it, the boss having a central cavity 65 slightly larger than cavity 63. Boss 59 fits tightly into a corresponding recess 61 in a combined electrical and fluid connector member 28, which has an electrical connector part 58 comprising yieldable portion 68 (Fig. 3) supported by rigid sleeve 72 filled with insulating material 84 through which electrical leads 57 extend to sockets 71. Pumped fluid from an impeller at the lower end (not shown) of the motor passes between the stator 11 and casing 22 into passages 27. Connector member 28 has fluid passages 54 which communicate with passages 27 when member 28 is in position. Pumped fluid is also permitted to leak into the rotor chamber, returning to the main stream through flameproof passages 41.
