Abstract

903,981. Electric motors. SUMO PUMPS Ltd. Dec. 14, 1960 [Sept. 14, 1959], No. 31316/59. Class 35. [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXVI] In a squirrel-cage electric motor driving a submersible centrifugal pump, the winding slots of the laminated stator 19 are completely embraced on the inner or tunnel side and are open at the outside. The windings 20 are inserted from the outside and the magnetic circuit is then completed by winding iron wire 21 around the outside. Finally, the stator is encapsulated with insulating material 22 to protect the windings against water. Additional protection may be afforded by an outside layer of glass tape or the like. The pumped water passes from the pump to an outlet 32 via ducts 17 in the rotor 1, which may be of helical form to provide a pumping action. The rotor 1 and the pump impellers 14 are connected together by dogs 15, 16 and mounted to rotate on tubular bearing members 3, 4 which fit over enlargements 11, 12, 13 of a stationary shaft 5. The shaft 5 forms a tie rod clamping together the stationary parts of the motor and pump. The rotor 1 may be arranged below its magnetic centre to provide an upward magnetic thrust partially offsetting the downward thrust due to the weight of the rotor. Waterproof connections (see Group XXXVI) are made between the supply leads and the motor terminal leads 25.
