Abstract

1,096,116. Roughening treatment for plastics film. KALLE A.G. Dec. 16, 1964 [Dec. 17, 1963], No. 51197/64. Heading B5B. One side of a relatively non-slip plastics film, which film preferably is in continuous web form, is subjected to a mechanical roughening treatment by sliding contact with a roughening element or elements. Such treatment produces a roughened effect which is so fine as to be substantially invisible to the naked eye but to be visible under the microscope; the slip properties of the film are improved in that the treated side of the film is of increased slip, i.e. has a reduced coefficient of friction. The roughening preferably is in two directions obliquely to the film so that a diamond pattern is produced thereon. The roughening treatment may be effected by one or more brushes or by a roller or rollers provided with bristles or fibres; the brush material preferably is mounted on a roller which is rotated at the point of contact with the film in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of a moving web of the film. The fibres or bristles advantageously are of soft natural or synthetic material, for example lambskin, wool, cotton or polyethylene. Alternatively, cloth, suede or skins, advantageously mounted on rollers, may effect the roughening treatment. The plastics film, which preferably is transparent, may be made from polyolefins, for example polyethylene or polypropylene ; halogenated polyolefins, for example polyvinyl chloride; and polyesters, especially those produced by condensing benzenedicarboxylic acids with aliphatic diols, for example polyethylene terephthalate. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,035,308.
