Abstract
1,095,861. Universal joints. DRAFTO CORPORATION. Jan. 3, 1966, No. 118/66. Heading F2U. A universal joint between two shafts of the kind having an internally toothed connecting sleeve 55 between two gears 77 fast with the shafts, has the teeth of one, or as shown of both, of the gears 77 formed with their pitch and root lines on a hyperbolic curve, and the sleeve 55 resiliently distorts to an oval shape when rotating under load with the shafts at an angle to give improved contact between the teeth. As shown the gears 77 are connected by frusto-conical sleeves 76 to hubs 70, the sleeves 76 flexing to oval shape in operation. All the teeth are of involute form. The tip of each tooth of the external gears may be formed on a hyperbola or on a circle. Lubricant retaining seals are provided between the sleeve 55 and the hubs 70 and between the hubs and the shafts.
