Abstract

Iron containing austenite stabilizers such as nickel, chromium, vanadium or manganese and a low content of carbon and silicon is cast to have an austenitic-martensitic microstructure, without ledeburite or graphite, and is then heat-treated to precipitate carbon from the martensite in the form of globular secondary graphite. Particularly suitable compositions are those containing <TABS:1095036/C6-C7/1> When nickel is present a nickel-rich segregate may be formed at the grain boundaries as a result of heat-treatment, thereby increasing abrasion resistance. Heat treatment of the cast material may consist of an anneal at 900 DEG C. for 45 minutes followed by furnace cooling, or the casting after solidification may be cooled at not more than 250 DEG C. per hour. Alternatively to produce a sorbitic structure and improve the elastic limit of the material it may be annealed for 1 hour at 800 DEG -1000 DEG C., cooled in air to 600 DEG C., heated to 750 DEG C. and finally cooled at 100 DEG C. per hour.
