Abstract
1,094,677. Piezo-electric crystals. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. June 24, 1966 [July 29, 1965], No. 28514/66. Addition to 986,011. Heading HIE. [Also in Division G1] A piezo-electric crystal sensitive to external conditions affecting its natural resonant frequency has an electrical heater on one face for maintaining a raised temperature. As shown (Fig. 1), a piezo-crystal 1 is coated on one face with a conducting layer 2 with interleaved gaps 3, this layer forming the heater resistance and acts, with a circular layer on the reverse side, as the electrodes for the crystal. The piezo-electric material may be quartz, tourmaline, Rochelle salt, barium titanate etc.; the conducting layer may be gold. The crystal may be coated with a substrate sensitive to an atmospheric constituent, e.g. sulphonated polystyrene which is sensitive to water.
