Abstract

1,094,565. Valves. BRITISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH Ltd. Sept. 13, 1965 [Sept. 14. 1964], No. 37498/64. Heading F2V. A valve unit for use in a fluid logic system consists of a laminated body of moulded plastics 10-14, which is symmetrical about the central lamina 12, the latter embodying an input which is directed to either of two outputs in laminae 11, 13 depending upon the position of a moving closure member. Laminae 10, 14 have actuating fluid inlets. The closure member is a one-piece plastics moulding made up of a pair of opposed straightsided cups 16 jointed by a pin 17. The central lamina 12 incorporates a bore (19, Fig. 2, not shown) through which a cup 16 is passed before it is moved sideways until the pin 17 reaches the end of a slot (20); the other laminae are then assembled and held in place by a clamp or an adhesive. The central lamina acts as a stop for the cups 16 and produces an air-cushion effect to reduce wear and bounce; the closure member is self-locking because the controlled fluid acts over the entire rear surface of one cup and only over that part of the other cup which is exposed through the slot. In a modification, the cups are frusto-conical, the adjacent ends of which coact with a circular opening in flexible gaskets, one on either side of the central lamina 12; the gaskets may be stretched over the closure member during assembly. Alternatively or in addition the movable closure member may be of flexible self-lubricating plastics material and the gaskets rigid and integral with the central lamina.
