Abstract

An adhesive suture strip is made from an organic, thermoplastic material having one surface coated with an adhesive and a central longitudinal portion which is sufficiently inextensible to hold the edges of a wound firmly together, and two end portions which are sufficiently extensible to move with the skin when the suture is in its useful position. The organic, thermoplastic material may be polyvinyl chloride and it may be porous or microporous. The central longitudinal portion may be reinforced with an inextensible material, e.g. bonded fibre fabric, woven fabric, or fibres, which may be bonded thereto or embedded therein. The adhesive may be any suitable pressure-sensitive surgical adhesive and the adhesive coating may have an openwork pattern thereon. The adhesive coating may be supplied with a protective cover strip which is removed prior to use.
