Abstract

1,094,299. Cleaning dust-laden gases; centrifugal separators. H. OKUMURA. Nov. 4, 1964 [Nov. 11. 1963; Nov. 15, 1963], No. 44958/64. Headings B2P and B1R. [Also in Division F4] Hot dust-laden gases are cleaned by passage through an inlet 8 into a volute-shaped passage 25 defined by a volute-shaped wall such that the centrifugal force exerted on the gas increases towards the centre of the passage, water is introduced onto the wall and into the gas to be cleaned through nozzles 14 and 29 and water separated from the cleaned gas collects in a sump and seals the lower edge of the volute-shaped wall, cleaned gas is withdrawn through a central pipe 24 and an outlet 9. The water in the sump is recirculated, the circuit including an overhead tank 13 and possibly a heat exchanger so that heat may be recovered from heated water. The pipe 24 may be dispensed with and the cleaned gas withdrawn from the innermost turn of the voluteshaped wall. In a modification two volute-shaped walls define a passage for gas to be cleaned and a passage traversed by air so that heat exchange occurs between the gas and air streams. The air inlet is preferably disposed in the centre of the apparatus and the outlet for heated air at the periphery.
