Abstract

1,094,124. Web coating apparatus. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 13, 1965 [May 28, 1964], No. 22103/64. Heading D1L. A device for applying coating composition to sheet material, comprises a reservoir divided into two or more separate compartments 2, 3 into which different coating compositions may be placed, each compartment having a series of outlet holes 7 such that the different compositions may be applied simultaneously as stripes on sheet material when it is passed continuously under the coating device. The holes 7 are preferably in a line across the device and barriers are located between adjacent holes to prevent intermingling of the different compositions. Such barriers can be formed by a wire 15 laid in a helical groove on the surface of the reservoir. In another embodiment the reservoir is of triangular cross section the series of holes being at one of the apices thereof. In use sheet material to be coated is passed over a rubber roller which maintains the sheet material in contact with the outlet holes of the coating device as the sheet material is passed between the device and the roller, and coating composition is fed to the separate compartments by gravity or pump means. The coating device can be given a transverse reciprocal motion to produce a wave effect to the stripes on the sheet material.
