Abstract

1,094,013. Freeze drying. ABBOTT LABORATORIES. Feb. 4, 1966, No. 5051/66. Heading F4G. [Also in Division G1] In apparatus for freeze drying material 12 in an evacuable chamber 10, heat is supplied to the frozen material as through a circulating fluid heating system 14 and two dissimilar electrical vacuum pressure measuring devices are mounted within the chamber, viz. a thermocouple type vacuum pressure gauge 23 and an ionization type vacuum pressure gauge 24, to determine accurately the end point of the high vacuum drying operation when further heat and/or pressure may be desired. The gauges are calibrated for a vacuum atmosphere of air and the gauges 23 can be utilized to control a heater 19 through a control and transmitting device 20 and a similar device 25 in conjunction with the gauge 24 actuates a pressure valve 26 to control automatically the operation of the apparatus. A condenser 28 is mounted within the chamber.
