Abstract

A hurley consists of two separate portions joined securely together, one portion comprising a length of timber shaped to form a shaft and rear portion of the toe of the hurley and the other portion comprising a separate piece of timber shaped to form the front portion of the toe of the hurley, and one or both sides of the toe portion are provided with a shaped facing of hard and tough material secured thereto, said facing having a depth of approximately 1/8 th to 1/3 rd the thickness of the toe portion. Specified materials from which the facing may be made are fibreglass, a plastics material or wood. When the facing is made of wood the grain direction of the shaped facing is different from the grain direction in the hurley. The grain directions in the two separate portions of the hurley may be different.
