1,093,403. Brake pedal arrangements; fluidpressure brakes. G. FRANCIA. Feb. 22, 1965 [Feb. 20, 1964], No. 7477/65. Headings F2E and F2F. A mechanical servo device is adapted to act on a piston in a cylinder disposed between a master cylinder and wheel brake cylinders of a vehicle, and comprises a spring arrangement acting to assist brake application to a progressively increasing extent while holding off the brake in the fully released position. The spring arrangement, Fig. 6, comprises e.g. a hairpin spring 1 which acts in opposition to spring 4 and exerts a gradually increasing force in the brake-applying direction as it straightens. In Fig. 6, which does not disclose the invention, the spring acts on a pedal 2. According to the invention, the spring acts on a piston rod 28, Fig. 8, of a piston 29 disposed in a cylinder 30 disposed in the line between the master cylinder and the wheel cylinders of the vehicle, the piston 29 being normally held by a spring 33 in an enlarged part of the cylinder bore allowing free flow of fluid until a given pressure is reached, sufficient to ensure engagement of the brake linings with the braking surfaces, after which it moves into the main part of the bore to control brake pressure.
