Abstract

1,093,053. Shuttleless looms. WEAVING RESEARCH & TEXTILE COMMISSION AGENTS Ltd. Jan. 13, 1965 [Jan. 23, 1964], No. 3009/64. Headings D1E and D1K. Selvedges. In a fabric in which weft is inserted from both edges as single picks interconnected in pairs at the edge from which they are inserted, the free ends of the picks are tucked into the same shed as the main length of the pick, and alternate tucked-in ends lie within the loop formed by two interconnected picks (and, in one form, are gripped between the loop and the end warp thread), the intervening tucked-in ends lying between successive loops. The wefts are laid by two weft inserting needles mounted at opposite sides of the loom, which cross the loom in close succession, the shed being changed between them; the operational cycle includes traverses in which one or both needles do not lay weft. Mechanism. The tucked-in ends are formed by means of a weft catcher, Fig. 4A, whose jaws 32, 34 open to allow the weft inserter 14 to pass between them as it emerges from the shed; the jaws then close to embrace the weft thread (without gripping it), the inserter 14 being recessed to enable the depending end 40 of the upper jaw to pass behind the weft. As the weft inserter reverses its movement and re-enters the shed, the weft catcher turns about its vertical shaft to bring the loop formed round the end 40 near to the selvedge. When the weft inserter has laid a short length of weft in the shed, a pin 18, Fig. 3E, penetrating the warp inwards of the selvedge descends, whereupon the weft is cut by a blade 20; the weft inserter completes its travel without laying weft. Whilst these actions occur, the weft 42, Fig. 4A, of the other inserter is held clear as a consequence of being lifted by the upper jaw 32 as the jaws opened; as this weft is being laid in the shed to form the second of a pair of connected, it slides off the jaw and engages round the tucked-in loop still held by the jaw 40, which then opens to release it. The tucked-in ends lying between weft loops are longer than those lying within weft loops, this being achieved by shogging the cutter 20.
