Abstract

A novel colour coupler contains at least one open-chain reactive methylene group separating and joined directly to the carbon atoms of two carbonyl groups, one of said carbonyl groups being part of a carboxylic acyl radical and the other being part of an amide radical, said reactive methylene group having one only of its hydrogen atoms replaced by an R4-SO2-O-group where R4 represents a carbon-containing radical through a carbon atom attached to the SO2-O- group. The couplers are particularly compounds of the formula <FORM:1092506/C2/1> where n is 1 or 2, R is alkyl, substituted alkyl, aralkyl, terpenyl, hydrocarbon-substituted terpenyl, aryl, substituted aryl or heterocyclyl, R1 and R2 represent hydrogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, aralkyl, aryl substituted aryl, or heterocyclyl, R3, when n is 1, represents alkyl or substituted alkyl aryl or substituted aryl, or, when n is 2, represents alkylene or substituted alkylene, arylene or substituted arylene. The couplers in general can be prepared by reacting a compound of the formula R-C(O)-CHBr-C(O).N(R1)(R2) with a silver salt of a sulphonic acid, of formula [AgOSO2]nR3. Several compounds prepared by this method are specified and other compounds specified are a -(3-aminophenylsulphonyloxy)-a - pivalyl - 3,5 - di - carboxyacetanilide prepared by catalytic reduction of the corresponding nitro-substituted compound, a -(4-aminophenylsulphonyloxy) - a - pivalyl - 3-[g - 2,4 - di - t - amylphenoxy) - butyramido] acetanilide prepared in a similar manner, a -{3-[a - (3 - n - pentadecylphenoxy) acetamido] phenyl - sulphonyloxy} - a - pivalyl - 3,5 - di-carboxyacetanilid prepared by acylating a -(3 - aminophenylsulphonyloxy) - a - pivalyl-3,5 - dicarboxyacetanilide using a - (3 - pentadecy(phenoxyacetyl chloride, a - [4 - (8-acetamido - 3,6 - disulpho - 1 - hydroxy - 2-naphthylazo) phenylsulphonyloxy] - a - pivalyl-3 - [g - 2,4 - di - t - amylphenoxy) butyramido] acetanilide prepared by diazotization of the corresponding a -(4-aminophenyl-) compound and subsequent coupling of the diazo salt with acetyl H-acid disodium salt.
