Abstract

1,091,840. Breather filter for I.C. engine. COPPER & ASBESTOS WASHER CO. Ltd. Nov. 3, 1966, No. 49303/66. Heading B1T. [Also in Divisions B8, E2 and F1] A combined breather filter and oil filler opening cap, designed to fit over a spigot 30 which leads into the crankcase or valve rocker cover of an I.C. engine, comprises an annular mass of filter material 29 enclosed between an integral cap 21 and tubular body 10 and removable therefrom. The material may be foamed polyester of density 30 to 35Kg/cubic metre and is inserted through annular mouth 28. Alternatively a knitted mass of wire is used, in which case flange 27 is replaced by a wire gauze or perforated plate and spring ring to hold the wire in place. Cruciform indentation 25 in cap 21 provides passages to the interior of body 10, and a U-shaped spring 19 depends from a member 11, to which it is fastened by lugs (16) (Fig. 1, not shown) to bear against the inside of spigot 30 while body 10 fits over the outside of the spigot. Oil may accumulate in the material 29 by virtue of the 'breathing' process but cannot drip back into the crankcase. The material 29 is periodically withdrawn and washed in petrol.
