A spare wheel mounting of a heavy motor vehicle, e.g. an omnibus, comprises a spare wheel carrier frame 8, 8a suspended from the underside, and behind the front bumper 7, of the vehicle, by being horizontally swingably mounted at 9a to brackets 9 on the vehicle frame 10, wherein a pair of levers 16, 18 pivoted together at 14, is pivoted on each side of the carrier frame 8, 8a to a shank of a U-shaped member 11 secured to the frame 8, 8a and to the frame 6 of the driver's cabin, each lever 18 being acted upon by a spring 15 to give an over-centre action as the carrier frame 8. 8a is pivoted downwards about 9a to give access to the spare wheel 12. The spare wheel 12 is retained on the carrier frame 8, 8a by a central strap 34 adjustably secured to a threaded spindle 33 pivoted to the frame 8, 8a, and removably secured to a bolt 36 secured on a spring steel plate 30 which locates the wheel 12. The plate 30 is held to the U-member 11 by a leather strip 39, and has two fork arms 30a secured at 31 to the carrier frame 8, 8a. When the frame 8, 8a is raised, the ends of the transverse member 8a abut against abutments 13 on the frame 6, and a bolt 28 is screwed through holes (22), Fig. 2 (not shown), in the abutments 13 into nuts 27 welded to the member 11. When the frame 8, 8a is lowered, an abutment 29 on each shank of the member 11 abuts an abutment 25 rigid with the vehicle frame. A sleeve 42 is provided for the introduction of a tyre lever (not shown) or a vehicle jack for raising the frame 8, 8a.
