Abstract

A filter for treating water, for example in a beverage vending machine, comprises an annular mass of granulated active carbon 3 enclosed between two metal end caps 4 and inner and outer sintered polythene tubes 1, 2. The space enclosed by tube 1 may be closed at each end by perforated, woven or expanded metal or plastics to enclose slowly dissolving sodium metaphosphate. The housing is of moulded thermoplastics in two parts 8, 9 and has a drain plug 12 and an air vent. In manufacture, tubes 1, 2 are pressed on to a heated end cap 4, and deform under lugs 5 pressed out of the end cap. The carbon is inserted, shaken down and the other end cap applied similarly, whereby the carbon is compressed. Foamed rubber sealing rings are secured to each end cap. <PICT:1091222/C1/1>
