Abstract

1,120,936. Hair curler. QHS Inc. 18 May, 1967 [15 Sept., 1966], No. 23192/67. Heading A4V. A hair curler comprises a substantially cylindrical body 20 having a hollow interior and a wall 66 through which heat is transferred, the body being made of a material capable of withstanding boiling water; an exothermic filling 42 situated within the interior of the body which is solid at room temperature but has a melting point lower than that of boiling water, and sealing means comprising at least two sealing portions 50 and 52, bonded to each other, with one of them closer to the hollow interior of the body than the other. Suitably, the curler is a polypropylene cylinder having a pair of opposed end walls 22 and 24 with outer lips 26 and 28 and having longitudinal ribs 32, which is filled by introducing the exothermic material, e.g. sodium hydroxide monohydrate, in the liquid form, through tube 68. The tube is then sealed by introducing a preheating pin which has a diameter smaller than the inner diameter of the tube and is maintained at an elevated temperature so that the inner surface of the tube 68 is heated by heat radiated from the pin; withdrawing the pre-heating pin and introducing a further heating pin which is maintained at an elevated temperature and has a diameter equal to the inner diameter of the tube 68 to further heat the inner wall of the tube; removing the heating pin and introducing a sealing pin which has a diameter greater than the inner diameter of the tube 68 but less than the outer diameter of the tube so that material is displaced from the inner wall of the tube and finally forms a plug sealing the tube and forming first sealing portion 50; then removing the sealing pin and repeating the operation by introducing a second pre-heating pin, followed by a heating pin and a second sealing pin 90 to form a second sealing portion 52 across the inner diameter of the tube. A clip 34 of a suitable springy plastic material is provided to clip on to the body of the curler 20 and hold the hair in place.
