Abstract
An electrolysis installation comprises an assemblage of at least two cells each having a graphite anode and a moving mercury cathode and an assemblage of at least two amalgam decomposers, the cells being electrically connected in series and the moving mercury being in closed circuit with the mercury amalgam in the corresponding decomposer but electrically separated from that of the or each adjacent cell or decomposer. The electrolyte and gas spaces of all the cells are in communication so that a single electrolyte inlet and a single outlet for electrolyte and evolved gas suffices for the whole installation. The entire bus-bar system is arranged above the rubber covers of the cell, each cell base having at least one groove into which the cathode connection to the mercury is removably inserted, and the anode bus-bar is vertically adjustable to move the anodes as a set, individual anode adjustment also being provided.
