Abstract

Esters of saturated and unsaturated monocarboxylic acids are prepared by reacting vinyl halide with an alkyl or cycloalkyl hydroxy compound and carbon monoxide at a pressure of at least 50 atmospheres in a reaction medium which comprises in solution (a) a noble metal, and (b) bromide and iodide ions. Examples describe the preparation of butyl acrylate and propionate, and cyclohexyl propionate and acrylate, using palladium, platinum, and ruthenium.
