Abstract

A mixture containing an unsaturated ester of a saturated aliphatic or aromatic mono- or dicarboxylic acid, e.g. vinyl or allyl acetate, produced by contacting an olefinic hydrocarbon and molecular oxygen with a solution comprising a saturated aliphatic or aromatic mono- or dicarboxylic acid, an ionizable saturated aliphatic or aromatic mono- or dicarboxylate, a palladium salt, a redox system and halide ions is distilled in the presence of a saturated aliphatic or aromatic mono- or dicarboxylate of an alkali metal, of an alkaline earth metal or of magnesium. The carboxylate may be prepared in situ by adding the corresponding base, e.g. a hydroxide or carbonate.
