Abstract

Copolymers of ethylene are obtained by passing a mixture of ethylene, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer copolymerizable therewith and a free-radical-generating polymerization initiator in which mixture the comonomer is present in an amount up to 50% by weight of the total monomer feed, through a high-pressure tubular reactor so that polymerization occurs and injecting ethylene, said copolymerizable monomer and a free-radical-generating polymerization initiator at at least one point along the length of the reactor, the temperature of the ethylene, copolymerizable monomer and initiator that is injected being from 10 DEG to 100 DEG C. and the ratio by weight of injected comonomers and initiator to inlet comonomer and initiator is from 1:10 to 10:1. The initiator may be introduced separately from the comonomers, and the injection of initiator and comonomers may take place at two or more points along the length of the reactor. Conventional catalysts are used. Comonomers exemplified are propylene, butene-1 and vinyl acetate.
