Abstract

1347361 Polymerizing ethylene IMHICO AG and K H IMHAUSEN 9 June 1971 [7 Aug 1970] 19652/71 Heading C3P In a continuous process for the polymerization of ethylene in a tubular reactor at at least 300 atmospheres and at most 400‹ C. in the presence of oxygen or a free radical initiator and 0 to 20 mole per cent of a moderator, the rate of flow of the polymerization mixture is constant over the length of the reactor which is provided with a heating and cooling jacket divided into several independent segments, a plurality of selectively operated ethylene feed means and of temperature measuring zones are distributed over the length of the reactor, there is a pressure measuring zone at the up-stream end of the reactor, a first valve at the outlet end of the reactor which is adjusted in dependence upon the temperatures and pressures measured in the reactor in such a way as to restore pressure level and temperature profile in the reactor to predetermined values and which is suddenly opened in dependence upon the rate at which changes in the temperature and pressure measured in the reactor occur until a predetermined pressure is reached, the first valve being connected at its outlet end to a polymer/monomer separation system, and a second valve at the outlet end of the reactor connected to a separate polymer/ monomer separation system separate from that connected to the first valve and which second valve is automatically activated with the first valve closed when the temperatures and pressures measured in the reactor exceed predetermined maximum values or when the pressures fall below a predetermined minimum value. The ethylene may be copolymerized with vinyl esters, acrylic derivatives or alkenes. Suitable moderators are hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes and chlorinated hydrocarbons. The initiator and optionally the moderator and comonomer may be fed in admixture with the ethylene, and additional pressure measuring zones may be arranged along the reactor, the cross-section of the reactor being widened at each inlet in proportion to the amount of material fed to the reactor. An example describes the polymerization of ethylene in the presence of oxygen and propane.
