Abstract
1,197,375. Polymerization process. STAMICARBON N.V. 4 March, 1968 [9 March, 1967], No. 10458/68. Heading C3P. In a process for continuously polymerizing two or more monomers in the liquid phase with a catalyst, and wherein the proportions of the monomers in the liquid feedstock are constant, the amount of reaction liquid introduced into the reactor is controlled to be inversely proportional to the pressure of a monomercontaining gas that is in equilibrium with the liquid feedstock, and the amount of catalyst introduced into the reactor is controlled in inverse proportion to the reaction temperature. The rate of flow of feedstock to the reactor is preferably controlled in a conduit between a vessel positioned before the reactor and the reactor, and the flow control is effected in dependence on the gas pressure in the vessel. The temperature of the feedstock between the vessel and the reactor may be lowered or raised in dependence on the level of the liquid in the vessel, the temperature lowering when the level rises and vice versa. The co-monomers may be ethylene and propylene. In the Figure, a suitable apparatus is illustrated wherein a stream of product, solvent and monomer leaves the reactor 1 and passes to the separator 6 from which the polymer is discharged through the conduit 7 and the remaining liquid is discharged through conduit 8. Constant flows of the monomers enter this conduit through conduits 10 and 12. From the condenser 14 the flow of liquid enters the vessel 15, which is equipped with a vent conduit 16, for venting undissolved gases, a pressure gauge 18 and level gauge 19. The outlet conduit incorporates a flow controller which is adjusted by the gauge 18. The conduit also incorporates a cooler 22, cooling conduit 23 incorporating a flow controller 24 which is adjusted by the temperature gauge 25. This adjustment is corrected by the level gauge 19. A constant flow of a third monomer may be added through the conduit 26.
