Abstract

A solid polymer of ethylene is produced by polymerizing ethylene with or without other monomers in an elongated zone at elevated temperature and pressure and in the presence of a free-radical catalyst, the process comprising withdrawing at least a portion of the reaction mixture from at least one point along the zone, separating the withdrawn mixture at elevated temperature and pressure into a heavy fraction and a light fraction and recycling one of these fractions to at least one point upstream in the elongated zone, the fraction recycled depending on the kind of polymer desired. Fresh reaction ingredients are introduced into the zone, optionally at one or more points downstream from the inlet, and reaction mixture is withdrawn from the outlet. The process results in increased conversion.
