Abstract

1,090,713. Outboard motors. OUTBOARD MARINE CORPORATION. Dec. 8, 1964 [Dec. 9, 1963], No. 49830/64. Heading B7V. [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] An outboard motor comprises an engine 227, Fig. 3, having an exhaust port 269 communicating via a sleeve 235 with an outlet in a lower unit 249, the sleeve being resiliently mounted in the lower unit. The outboard motor 211, has a transom bracket to which a swivel bracket is connected for vertical swinging about a horizontal pintle. The unit 221 swings about a vertical, kingpin and includes an I.C. engine 227 with a port 269 through which exhaust gases discharge into sleeve 235. A resilient pad 260 includes a cushion 237 which together with cushion 243 supports sleeve 235. A water pump 261 supplies coolant through discharge line 265 to engine 277 and via a branch 283 to water cooling jacket 247 and return line 267. Under engine cooling conditions exhaust gases flow through aperture 279 into chamber 277 and out through port 255. Additional muffling is obtained by passing water through pipe 287 into sleeve 235. In another embodiment the upper resilient cushion 337, Fig. 5 is cooled by circulation, of the engine coolant through arcuate passages 391, 397. In another embodiment the engine exhaust port has an extension which carries the upper resilient mounting for the sleeve. The water cooling jacket has a forward facing inlet at its lower end and rearward facing outlet at its upper end so that the propeller causes water circulation through the jacket. In a further embodiment the upper resilient mounting for the sleeve together with the water jacket are carried by a lower unit to which the engine is attached.
